VIVIAN BROCK

And she had thought Lyden was tiny. This town was even smaller. A small shiver went down her shine, the frail girl attempting to burrow further into her knit jacket. She wasn't partial to autumn. Or winter. She enjoyed spring. Summer was always too hot. Being the perfectionist that she was, even the weather had to be just perfect. But it wasn't like she could just stay inside all of the days that it wasn't pleasant. School was starting soon, and she still hadn't gotten and chance to really poke around town by herself. Her parents - or father, for the most part - seemed unperturbed by the idea of her wandering around all by her lonesome. It was such a small city. What was the worst that was going to happen? It wasn't like New York. No one got murdered or assaulted here.

Being her usual self, the girl was unconcerned, also. Her pink lips were upturned in a little smile, her hands burrowed deep into her jacket pockets, but the young teenager looking over-all pleasant despite the slightly chilly weather. She let out a little merry sigh, brown eyes wandering over the little shops lining the sidewalk. She wasn't entirely sure if she liked living in this town or not. It wasn't like she had left anyone behind. She didn't have a best friend, or even real friends, let alone a boyfriend or anything like that. And going into her sophomore year in a new school didn't seem overly threatening. After all, she liked to think of herself as pretty bright. She'd do fine, wouldn't she?

Movement from a store window captured her attention and her feet paused. Vivian glanced over her right shoulder at the feline stretching in the window. Glancing upwards, a faded sign hung over the door, the dented red words spelling out "Pet Shop", and then someone's name above [[ Couldn't resist. xD; ]]. The young girl had to brighten a little, looking back to the case in the shop window. As most salespeople did, they put their most appealing merchandise up front. And in a place like this, it happened to be a trio of gray kittens. One fuzzy ball was curled up atop a tiny cat tree, the other having just awoken and stretching his little white paws. The last was fervently batting at a feather connected to a string hanging from the top of the cage. How easily they were amused.

"Aww."

Even she had to give a mellow coo, though the girl had never been one for animals. Kittens were about her limit. Cats were fine - if only her mother wasn't allergic to fur. But they were docile and cute and soft and friendly. Now it was puppies she couldn't handle. Puppies or dogs or anything. So many times a slobbering mutt had bound right up to her feet, dripping its saliva all over her shoes and pants, panting its hot breath in her face, shaking mud or water or whatever all over her. They were too energetic, too dirty, too hairy. That went for things like rodents. Ugh, creatures like rats? Their slimy tails weren't too "cute". And hamsters... how they could squish themselves under doorways. And birds always squawked and bit... Well, in short, Vivian had many reasons to not like animals.

Except for kittens. Those were fine.

The charm of the tiny creatures slowly wore off and its magic passed over the girl. She exhaled through her nostril, soft puffs of smoke drifting up over her head. Keeping her eyes on the kittens and always smiling, she backed up a few steps, preparing to move on again. So, so far, she supposed this place wasn't too bad.
